Journey of a Foster Care Grandmother
By Sarah Poff
Entry 1:
You are going to be a grandmother!!!
Those words were ringing in my ears.
Grandmother, Grandmother?
I had longed for those words and yet the words I heard were somehow different than I had envisioned.  The emotions were raging inside of me.  I sat quite not knowing what to say.   It seemed an eternity until he spoke again.    His long awaited next sentence was, you are going to be a foster grandmother.  I was not sure what to say or what to do next. I knew my son and his wife were taking foster care classes and yet not until that moment did it dawned on me that I had a     role in this.                                                                                                                                      Those words, those precious words… you are going to be a grandmother had arrived at my door in a new and different way.  I sat there thinking, what do you mean, I’m a grandmother, my 1st reaction was no, I’m not a grandmother these aren’t your children.    Well, being of grandmother age      I knew better than to utter those words.  I sat for a long time searching for the right words to say …. I finally found voice within to repeat what he had said..  Ok I’m going to be a grandmother.    I quietly said “Son I never thought of it that way.”
until next month….  When you meet our girls
